1000+ year old sitka spruce and DOD
quinault, wa

in memoriam rollin cooke walton, Dear Old Dad, gone to be with the Lord he loved 08/06/08

DOD always tried to encourage and help everyone. his love and compassion were a blessing to people beyond count. he was always ready with a helping hand and encouraging word. he had his faults, as do we all, but always took responsibility for his actions and tried to make amends if he had wronged. beloved by many, he will be sorely missed. DOD passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends who sang him some favorite hymns as he slipped from the bonds of this earth. gone but never forgotten r.i.p. DOD

this picture was shot at the end of september 2007 on the last, of many, trips that DOD and i took together. it is one of my faves of him. there have been many great men throughout history but i can think of no one i'd be prouder to call father. enlarge for best viewing and please click a thumbs up; i'd like this to be number one of the most popular pics of mine as a small tribute to a fine man

this is almost the whole tree of the previous detail shot. in this shot Dear Old Dad, who's 5'10" tall, would be a tiny speck (in the above sized pic) at the bottom barely 1/2" tall

this is not a new pic but my old shipmate sigvar died today. he worked on tugs a long time and i like this best of what few tugs pics i have. sigvar loved all ships and boats but tugs most of all. his fav photographer was: http://jcrae.smugmug.com/ , who is my fav for ships and boats of all types as well as many other nice pics also. i hope this finds you and yours well and in good spirits. happy cinco de mayo for those who celebrate it. tell someone you love them today.

 r.i.p you salty old seadog

stirred from the couch just enough to use the puter to enjoy some fine smuggin today. didn't so much as look at my camera so you're getting another shot from the walk the little boss and i took yesterday. this is from the home of our friends, mike and suzanne, who live just up the street from the restaurant. the shelves are hadnmade and very cool. they have a toggle underneath that loosens so you can slide them into a position you like then tighten them down again. suzanne is a sign language interpreter and photos of her hands are appearing in a book that's just been released which i think is titled 'working hands'. (sorry i don't have a link for it right now) thanks so much for the wonderful comments on the little boss's shot and shadow pose. she'll be THRILLED! have a great week all
dedmanshootn > under the bathroom sink

was reflecting today, put in the mood by the great early challenge post i saw, and didn't go out to enjoy our storm, wasn't much of a storm by local standards only about 40-50mph winds and some snow that turned to rain, so i had nothing for a dp. had to wrestle the ants for control of the bathroom again (note to self - asap go to the farmers co-op and get a permanent solution for that little problem) and thought 'hey why not shoot that?', which led to more reflecting. when i was in early grade school in southwest pennsylvania we were allowed to watch a half hour of tv a day on school days and an hour on week-ends. i alternated between 'the cisco kid' and another local fav i think i remember as 'mr. wizard'. 'tudor the turtle' would always ask mr. wizard to work magic so he could become some cool new thing he was excited about and it would never work out like poor tudor thought it would. the show would end with mr. wizard returning everything to how it'd been and then telling tudor "always always i tell you tudor: be just what you is, and not what you is not. those who is what they is have the happiest lot." words i'd like to say i always live by but i put on masks sometimes and tell those little 'white' lies and generally screw things up pretty good from time to time. when i catch myself at it i always try to remind myself who i actually am and then be that man. so what does this incredibly long-winded commentary have to do with this shot? when i contemplated sticking you with another plumbing and 'junk' pic from my apartment i asked myself "self, what kind of photographer are you?" i've no technical hpptographic skill liike so many of you have, and even less with digital and software, nor do i have that one particular photographic 'thing' that so many of you have. i like pretty much everything. so... to answser the question on the table... i am a lazy button pusher who will point the camera at most anything and push the button and post the result. i'm satisfied with this, though it probably ain't gonna bank much, as i just plain enjoy all the wonderful things there are in this interesting beautiful, though often apinful and ugly too, world. my late DOD said he was proud, to many other people when i wasn't even around to overhear so its probably even true ;-) , of me for doing the pics and this smug site. that is more than enough satisfaction for me. its a new year and i'm hopefully finally shaking this infection and getting better than i've been for some time. hopefully this will result in more energy and me better handling things that much need doing to keep body and soul together and indoors but don't expect much change in my posts :-) . (i will try to be less long-winded in the future but no promises)
