dedmanshootn > new tech
07/15/08

this is a lousy pic but i'm too tired to care. this is what came fedex and i finally had energy and time to get it set up and running. should be no more tech troubles, for a while anyway :), hurray. this came to me out of the clear blue sky due to someone's great kindness and generosity! can still hardly believe it. this is about four or five orders of magnatude better than what i had and i guess now i have no excuse for anything any more except my own ineptitude ;-) i'll have some learing to do to properly use everything. sigh, hard for an old dedman to learn new tricks. blessings in great measure on the gift giver, wish i could find some word to express how ( - - - ) i feel. i shant ever forget and shall do my best to pay it forward. guess i'm done gushing or whatever i'm doing. thank you all for your kind wishes re the cold, i am gradually getting over it. summer time colds, we hates em forever
dedmanshootn > purple iris
07/14/08

everything's been blooming late this year; actually just bloomed a lot longer than the usual season i guess as we've had "spring" flowers since april. this is the lone iris i know of around town and i loved the dark color so i ahd to try a shot. have been really enjoying catching up on the great pics and interesting commentary this week-end. i'm done in now tho so off to bed, this darn cold is slowly easing its grip and going away. i'm being extra careful to sleep more than usual to keep that trend going
dedmanshootn > pink clover
07/13/08

i tried some rose shots today but didn't get anything good. i don't get good domestic rose shots, especially compared to the beautiful work by some of y'all, but do like weeds. i suspect its a matter of affinity. i'm pretty much considered the weed in the family garden, not so much by DOD or my sis and b-i-l, and probably the wildest too. i definitely believe the person behind the lens comes out through the lens. for y'all who enjoy them i got some more bus shots

dedmanshootn > little boss and beautiful visitor
07/12/08 (2of2)

the little boss was very excited to see this, her first ever large wild butterfly, and kept running to the backdoor every couple minutes to check on it. we all made trips back to see it many times while working the lunch shift. we don't get many like this in the city and really enjoyed our special treat
dedmanshootn > tiger swallowtail butterfly (i think)
07/12/08 (1of2)

we had a beautiful visitor at work today. he flew up, exhausted, and landed on our front door just as i was getting off the bus. i got a piece of paper and urged him onto it then carried him around to our back door in the shade. after an hour or so of resting he recovered somewhat and crawled up our brickwall which is where i got this shot once the initial lunch rush had been served. there is a second post today, at the "please, please, PLEASE!" request of the little boss, of her and this beauty. this is the first large live butterfly she's seen 'in the wild'. i'm off to bed once again but i think i am a bit better today than yesterday. rotten colds! i'm taking the week-end off so shall be looking through what i've missed, and boy am i looking forward to that!, when and as i have energy. thanks for all the well wishes
dedmanshootn > "wiry" seedhead
07/11/08

i thought the "wires" coming out of this were very cool and can't remember ever seeing their like in a seedhead like this. got the fedex thing straightened out and delivered finally, tho too late to matter for the day of course, was just happy to get it at all by this time. sorry i'm behind on commenting, the cold i thought i'd gotten rid of came back with a vengence last night so all i did was sleep and go to work. just woke up now but am right back to bed as soon as i get this posted. hope y'all are doing great and have a fine week-end. thanks for the fun comments on the roundabout sign. i look forward to catching up on the interesting things you've shot as soon as i can
dedmanshootn > going in circles, slowly
07/10/08

that's more or less how my day has been. started off running a bit late and almost missing my bus, progressed through arguing with fedex as to why their driver has tried to deliver a package 3 days in a row before we're open, and posted the failed delivery slip right on our hours of business sign! am i the only one that finds that a bit much?! doing errands after work had a bus break down, rarely happens but can't be helped sometimes, so missed my connection and ended up having to walk over a mile to get to an alternate route. the upside; mt. baker was beautiful with an awesome thunderhead building on its lee side, the breeze not only didn't die (as feared) it picked up so i didn't roast, there were lots of beautiful birds flying about and chirping (tho i had no time to even try a single shot alas), the exercise is certainly good for me, and i shot this sign which summed up my feelings nicely. this is actually a warning sign for a 'roundabout' (why they can't call them 'traffic circles' like everywhere else i've no idea but here in western washington they've been deemed 'roundabouts' so that is what they shall be i guess) and was a welcome sight as it meant i was less than a block from my bus stop and almost on my way home. my day wasn't actually bad just 'roundabout' and slow. hope yours was/is much better. for those interested i caught a couple more buses while out and about as a bonus

dedmanshootn > daisy plus
07/09/08

i liked this daisy with the buttercups behind it. the buttercups were growing over two feet off of the ground, perhaps the longest stems on buttercups i've ever seen, and the daisy was close to three feet tall
dedmanshootn > sun dappled 'jungle'
07/08/08

i know there's a sun glint off the lens but i loved the light glowing along the hollow grass stems and leaves so decided to keep it anyway, just because. it looked like some jungles i've been in, in miniature, so i tried to give the shot that feel. the grass stems were approx 1/16" - 1/4" in diameter. thanks for the comments about 'the lunch box', i thought it was totally cool, the food was really good too. i caught, not all that well alas, another bus i've been trying to capture today for those who like them; the '401 fairhaven' is my 'home' route and usually uses the shorter decorated buses as fairhaven is something of a tourist area, being where the alaska ferry ports.

dedmanshootn > the walkie-talkies are a big hit
07/07/08

its the little bosses birthday. my sis has a knack of finding THE present and did so again with these walkie-talkies as can be seen by the laughing happy faces. these are the big, middle and little bosses and a friend. the friend's crown was made by the little boss, a special one for each of us at the party with our name and special decorations. we all had a great time and the food was fantastic! (which i'd say even if it hadn't been the restaurant that i work at.) i just have to list, and enjoy again, the food because it was SO good. we started with a fine leafy salad - a specialty of the middle boss; sliced avocado, english cucumber and cold roast spiced pork with dipping sauces; pot stickers - a specialty of the big boss; veggie fried rice; ba pao tofu (spicy veggies and tofu); sesame prawns; kalbi ribs - another big boss specialty; fancy noodles and prawns; fresh garlic and bok choy (and one dish same with chicken); brown and white steamed rice; green and oolong teas; plum dumplings; butter cream iced white cake with bavarian cream filling; not enough stomach room, despite stuffing ourselves like a chritmas goose, so left-overs to take home for everyone.

i ate lunch at a very cool restaurant a few weeks ago and finally got the pics processed and uploaded. if you like collectibles, lunch boxes of all types in this case, you can check em out at the link below. the shots aren't great as i just had the camera flash and no tripod, or enough time either. i do plan to go back when i visit there again and shoot some more

dedmanshootn > double double portrait on a studebaker bumper
07/06/08

i'm finally getting some of the pics from the car show last week-end processed. this bumper was so mirror bright i couldn't resist taking a portrait of my sis and me, especially when i saw how the image warped with the curve in the bumper. i'm fighting a cold so decided to use this today and stay in and sleep a lot
dedmanshootn > mallard ice cream
07/05/08

this fine ice cream shop is just a few blocks from my apartment, right downtown. they make their own from fresh ingredients. DOD is the ice cream fiend in the family and when he'd get the urge while visiting this is where we'd go. i really like this painting by their emergency exit
dedmanshootn > rainy day hedge blossoms
07/04/08

happy independence day to all my fellow americans, and happy friday/saturday to all the rest of you. it was my very fav weather today; gray, overcast, drizzling rain and about 55F. perfect for wiping pollen and other irritants out of the air and remaing cool. had to use a flash for this as light was so low. this hedge is right behind the bus stop nearest my apartment and while it is very beautiful and lush it is also one of my allergic irritants tho it was no problem today. i thought these were beautiful with the water on them and shot with very low flash to try to keep as much of the luster of the 'wet look' as possible. for scale the leaf at the bottom is about 1.5 inches long. for you who enjoy the bus paint jobs i also captured another one of them i've been wanting to -

dedmanshootn > 'music glamour' petunias
07/03/08

there are huge baskets of these hanging from many lampposts in fairhaven, which was a seperate settlement over 100 years ago but is part of bellingham now tho retaining its own distinct flavor, where i usually go to the library and do my grocery shopping and i just had to try to capture them, especially after i noticed the beautiful blue 'eyes' inside them. used the flash for fill here as this is the lower side of a basket over three feet across and was shadowed
dedmanshootn > sunny daisy
07/02/08

forgot to wish a happy canada day to all the canadians yesterday, would like to have some excuse but the truth is my memory just slipped a cog. belated happy canada day anyway. there's a huge bunch of these on my way to the bus stop which brighten my day when i see them. don't know what it is about daisies but they always seem happy to me. hope this brightens your day
