dedmanshootn > kayaker in sis's backyard
06/16/08

my sis lives right on a beautiful river in north bend, wa and this kayaker was taking a morning run downriver on a day that made people think that maybe summer has finally arrived around here

06/13/08

just realized its friday the 13th here in the us of a. my fav day usually. a bit heavy-hearted tho as DOD (my dp 05/16/08) is in the hospital and the docs don't really know what's wrong except that he's not doing very well. i won't be posting this week-end as i'll be down there being with him tho i'll almost surely have something to backpost when i get back home as using my camera is like breathing to me, not absolutely necessary but a good idea if i want to live. i had some things i much wanted to say about the posting and comments yesterday but i'm so tired i'll just have to wing it and hope it comes out right as i'm posting this then off to bed early. i didn't enter the contest because i expected to win, nor do i now, tho i'd certainly like to be awarded something. i entered for the education. education has costs, the cheapest of which is money as far as i'm concerned - tho many would disagree with me to judge by their actions. my purpose in bringing what i consider injustice to public attention wasn't that i expected people to be 'fair' or that life itself is fair since i've known from gradeschool that life ain't fair and SO WHAT. i did want to hear what y'all had to say about voting other people down to build yourself up. clearly that can't ever work i've always thought and i was heartened, and not at all surprised, that that is what y'all think also. when someone started pushing down many peoples fine work here on smug, including some of my own, i was miffed. after some reflection however i left my pics with the thumbs activated because my goal isn't so much that my work be on any 'top' list, tho that's certainly pleasant, but that people enjoy it and that i get feedback from peers so i can improve my craft. i've learned a great deal by opening my smug page and especially since i joined the daily community, i thank you all. bottom line is that for me anger is like murder and i don't consider this 'thumbs down' crap anything to kill over so i ain't gonna be angry either. its really more like the foolishness is like fleas, annoying til you realize what it is and take appropriate measures...then forgotten. i agree with all of you who expressed that 'ok...so what' attitude and agree that the worst thing that can be done to the mean-spirited is to leave them the joy of their own company and move on with one's own joy. of course my commentary was a blatant appeal for votes also so in that vein...please click on that pretty poppy in this gallery and vote the links ;-) thanks one and all for the joy, education and votes! (even whomever votes everything down...may you find something real to put that energy to). i can't imagine a better place to be posting thoughts and pics nor a better group of people to share both with. blessings on you all in massive measure

i'd like you to vote on what i perceive as an injustice. several of us from this community have an entry in an on-line photo contest. the contest voting period will soon end and some one of apparently low self-esteem, and certainly low ethics, is voting other peoples entries down. this seems just plain wrong to me and gets my dander up. i'd like to shove it right up their nose with a garnish of sneezing powder for good measure. i don't like to see tactics like that succeed so i'm enlisting your help if you're willing. i'm including the link to each entry i know about from smugmug, if i missed yours i'm sorry but you didn't let me know about it and i'd've been happy to vote for you, and if you'd take a minute or two to click over and vote, five is the star farthest to the right - hint hint ;-), by clicking the number of stars you feel each entry deserves we'd much appreciate it. you don't need to do anything else and please don't use the e-mail function from the entries as there's a glitch that will erase your vote if you do. enough real votes should swamp some one playing silly buggers by trying to sandbag other's entries. please feel free to weigh in on the subject of ethics too if you wish. what does this have to do with this picture? absolutely nothing i guess but there ya go. the entries are ladykate, lyndon mendoza, mine, kre8ive thanks
the contest is over thanks to all who voted!
dedmanshootn > posing spotted towhee
06/11/08

this lovely gent just insisted on having his picture taken. i was across the street looking for an angle on the armory building and he flew right up by me and started his 'chip'. he led me across the street and then flew up and posed in a lovely planter of flowers. i had my 18-55mm lens on tho so didn't shoot as it was too far but did find some things of interest right by me to shoot. i heard him start a steady 'chip' and looked up he was only about 8 feet away. i took a couple and, as he seemed to be enjoying it rather than nervous, decided to switch on my 85-200mm. he waited patiently while i did this and posed prettily for a couple more. since he didn't fly away or even appear nervous i reset and bracketed as the lens isn't made for my camera and can only be used manually and the light was tricky. he waited til i gotten two or three bracketed shots then flew off. lucky for me he was such a ham as this was the very last shot and the best by far of the lot. its almost as if he knew i'd gotten it right finally so he could go on his way. a very entertaining seven or eight minutes, as you can no doubt tell by my long-windedness

plaque for the veterans memorial flag
06/10/08

the plaque has finally been installed. this goes with the flag in my very first daily pic. there is a spot for those from the middle east war, which has been ongoing for at least 18 years as far as i and many others here are concerned, but it won't be inscribed and installed til the last troops come home. for those who liked the bus the other day there is another bus (i think ladykate might like it tho it has no bling) and some of the kids art from inside the buses i mentioned here:

dedmanshootn > spaghetti
06/09/08

the shot is as uninspired as the sauce. needed garlic, celery, onions, mushrooms, olives and a bit of dried red chilis for a real good sauce but didn't have em and couldn't do the stairs today so i went with what i had...which is why you're getting my spaghetti today...because its what i have. thank you all for the kind well wishes. Lord willing i'll be ok in a day or two if this follows the usual pattern and i'm used to it so not as daunting as it might seem. the main thing i hate is that it messes with my language ability, verbal written typed whatever, (and also my senses) so i apologize if my comments have been garbled. hope you were able to figure out what i've meant
dedmanshootn > pigeon taking flight
06/08/08

you get this today because i had a (even the docs don't know exactly what it is but its at least an order of magnitude worse than a migraine)headache and also had a problem with my feet so i couldn't wear shoes or even my sandals. during the late afternoon sun i limped barefoot down the stairs knowing i could probably at least get one of the ubiquitous pigeons from my stoop. not a fancy subject or shot but at least i got it here. it is a very great pleasure to participate in this daily community and i thank you all
dedmanshootn > my favorite wta bus
06/07/08

many of the wta (whatcom transit authority - whatcom is the county i live in) buses have decorative paint jobs. there are a couple that are particularly special. this is one of them. children from the area were encouraged to submit drawings and then some of these were chosen to be enlarged and used to decorate the coaches. this is my fav as the cat hula dancing in the grass skirt makes me smile and feel a bit more hopeful for this poor benighted world everytime i see it. despite nearing 70,000 population bellingham has retained its 'small town' feel and much of that attitude and has a lot of community projects and contests like this. many of the buses have local schoolkids drawings and also local poets poems inside in addition to the usual ads and admonitions

one of the reasons, besides the wonderful staff, that the fairhaven library is one of my favorite places to go in town. i manually preset the focus on the chair then set the camera on my bag on a table and shot with available light - which is why the light is two colors as there's lovely long windows behind me. for those of you who liked the dark colors of yesterdays dp i reshot more of the whole bed which you can see - and there's pics from inside, including a bigger view of the area in this shot, (and ouside) the library too - http://dedmanshootn.smugmug.com/gallery/4855371_JgWrE#308101796_y8W58
dedmanshootn > cloudy day greens
06/05/08

my kind of weather again all day which sure had most other people grumping about winter in june. had a very busy tiring day and not much chance to shoot in light that wasn't flatter than the chicken that only half crossed the road but did like the look of these. this is part of the garden in front of one of my favorite places in town... http://dedmanshootn.smugmug.com/gallery/4855371_JgWrE#289552306_UErSL
dedmanshootn > group of gulls
06/04/08

i actually shot this near the same time and place as the train yesterday but it poured rain all day today and my allergies were acting up so... i liked their positions relative to each other and their poses, tho the young one turned his head a bit just as i shot sahdowing his eye
dedmanshootn > bnsf engines pulling freight
06/03/08

the main railroad between the ports of seattle, wa, usa and vancouver, bc, canada runs through bellingham. my apartment is about 3-4 blocks from it so i hear them when they go through, a sound i love. some days we get two or three and other days we get over a dozen. the rails run right along the water for quite a long time and its a very pretty trip tho only one passenger train a day runs between the two cities any more and there's talk of phasing it out. my mum used to take me on the train to visit her parents when i was preschool and we lived in seattle (they lived in vancouver). i really like to travel by train and will miss it when it gets phased out, as i've no doubt it will
dedmanshootn > 'hairy' red buds
06/02/08

i don't like foreground bokeh too much but the little (can't remember the correct word for them so...hairs) on the buds and stems are very cool, i think, so i decided to go with this anyway. i don't know what plant this is either, just a couple of the many things i don't know
dedmanshootn > small but mighty pollinator
06/01/08

i don't have an actual macro lens so this is just hand-held with my 18-55mm. i just couldn't believe how much pollen this tiny, the flower is a 3/4" buttercup for scale, wasp/bee had managed to accumulate on itself. i think it was actually having trouble taking flight because i was able to try 5 or 6 shots before i went back into work. the bosses youngest daughter and i were out getting her a 'roly-poly' bug (which i grew up calling potato bugs) for a pet and as i've said before...i do carry my camera almost everywhere.
dita requested to see some of brianna's, miss geniality in my dailies, drawings so here are a few (super-stressed mommies are like the nice man pointing a gun at you, do everything they tell you) plus one of my fav fun pics of her

dedmanshootn > poultry pulchritude parade
05/31/08

was my kind of morning, weatherwise (cool, cloudy and threatening rain), but most people's kind of weather in the evening. i took 'miss geniality' http://dedmanshootn.smugmug.com/popular/2/283302079_7GWWP#283302079_7GWWP for a walk as it was a beautiful evening and she was stuck at the restaurant. we walked all around the neighborhood seeing many fine things to draw (her) and photograph (me) but nothing really struck me as a daily. then we went up a street we never had before and came across these chickens out running around in the yards and street and viola. these don't have the bling like ladykate's but i ain't much of a bling guy
