dedmanshootn > my kitchen window at night (detail) 04/28/08 today was my recharge day. couldn't even get it together to brave the stairs to sit on the stoop and shoot one of the ubiquitus pigeons. was going to shoot my big toe as threatened but decided to keep that in reserve

dedmanshootn > goldfinch - the state bird of washington, iowa and new jersey 04/25/08 addendum: thank you for your kind comments all. several of them noted the light, pose or getting these quick guys at all. i had the afternoon off so took the bus to the shore even tho it was a very grey day. i saw some wonderful things but it was a little too grey so almost nothing i shot (3 out of 100 even look like anything at all but not too good) turned out. my energy ran out so i went back to just sit and wait for the bus instead of keeping shooting. while i was walking to the stop i passed this tree and there were about 4 goldfinch and 5 house finch bickering and flitting about as they do. they were very leery of me so i had to stay a good 20' away which is max for my meager eqpt and the light still wasn't great especially for small moving targets but i figured i'd just look and delete (the beauty of digital over film for sure). i shot 30+ before the goldfinches appeared to win wahtever the argument was about because the house finches left. this guy hopped up to this lovely vantage to sing his triumph (presumably) and i shot about 6 before he too flitted off. of all those shots this was the only one that turned out but i'm very happy with it. its the first one i've ever caught well which is probably why i'm rattling on so about it. thanks again for you kind comments. i wish you good light and interesting things to shoot in it
dedmanshootn > wall of fortune 04/24/08 this is a small part of a wall at the chinese restaurant where i work. much of our walls in the dining area are brick like this and now also sport fortunes from fortune cookies like this. this was first done by my boss's youngest (my 'miss geniality' 04/22 pic) and one of her visiting friends when they were 'bored' about 3 years ago and has become a big hit with customers who've continued the practice. periodically large numbers of them fall out and my boss and i, despite his daughters pleas, throw them away lest we become a landfill but they're soon replaced
dedmanshootn > this isn't exactly a second daily. the young lady in my shot from 2 days ago 04/22 'miss geniality' is my boss's 7 yr old. she's shot a few pics for my 'my smug mug' project and wanted to do an 'art' photo of her own. i gave her the camera and told her she could shoot anything she wanted to inside the restaurant. i didn't so much as watch where she was going, let alone give any advice. this is what she came up with and is uncropped or altered. the little vases of flowers are from our previous walk during a break. she asked if i would post it and who could say 'no' to that face (even if i'd wanted to)

dedmanshootn > the new veterans flagpole on a blustery day 04/18/08 the old flagpole honoring our local veterans who laid down their lives in our service blew down in a bad storm in 2005. the community held fund-raisers and pestered the politicians until enough money was gotten to raise this new beauty. my old head can't remember right now for certain but i believe its 60 feet (don't ask me to do the metric conversion right now either...lol) tall which gives you an idea of the size of the flag. i pass by it at least 5 or 6 times a week and still get that "AH!" catch in my throat when i see it and pause to remember the sacrifices of those who serve us, past and present. this shot doesn't do it justice but i haven't been able to shoot one yet that does.
