dedmanshootn > sis on the roots
1000+ year old sitka spruce
quinault, wa
10/24/09

this tree is just awe inspiring. you can feel the age but also the continued vitality. i very much wanted to get a pic like the one with my late DOD (link below) but there were some very rude people deliberately blocking access so sis and i made do with a different angle. rude people are their own problem and best just ignored if at all possible i feel. sis and i were happy with the pics we got anyway, and the connection to DOD was there regardless also. glad for those of you that got a chuckle from yesterday's sign shot, can never have too many laughs in a day i think. i'm doing better again and plan to comment as much as i can while my energy holds. really looking forward to catching up. the dailies, and smug in general have such wonderful pics all the time that even a couple days leave many wonderful pics missed. hope you're having a great week-end

dedmanshootn > we serve crabs
10/23/09

i always get a chuckle from signs like this. a fav t-shirt, long since worn to rags alas, had a picture of the fish over the wehole chest with the caption "i have a crappie attitude" - got a grin just remembering and writing about it. this sign is in 'the one eyed crab', westport, wa. if you're in westport i highly recommend you go as its just excellent food, a fun staff and atmosphere and priced right to boot. sis and i restrained ourselves and only ate there four times in the five days we were in the area ;-) . i ran a search for a link but they don't have theire own website. i did find a link to a review, from the ny times no less, not just ME that thought they were a great placve i reckon. thanks for all the wonderful comments on the swallowtail yesterday. to answer the question, no the background is not wet. it is gloss enamel trim from around the kitchen door, you can see it in the shot of the little boss on the link. i shot the pic with my 18-55mm from approximately six inches, same as this shot actually :-) . i apologize for not being around to comment today, just the usual suspects. managed to gather enough together to post this and i'm off to bed. hopefully tomorrow will be a better day by God's grace. peace and joy to all of good will

dedmanshootn > pelican targeting
pelican fishing series (1of4)
10/21/09

i just liked the lines, and especially just the tip of the beak coming out of his body shadow, of this guy as he targeted a fish and prepared to dive. i liked yesterday's sunset shot but your response was just WOW! bless you all for your kindness. posting very early and off to bed to finish recovery from yesterday's attack so i can work tomorrow. give someone a helping hand today

dedmanshootn > watching the sunset at grayland wa
10/20/09

grayland is where sis and i stayed longest, with many thanks to my friends d & d whose generosity in lonaing us their place there made the whole trip feasible. terrific beaches with good access, many can be driven on so are accessible even if you're not greatly mobile like me, and a location that made it easy to go either up or down the coast. (please imagine a couple cool quotes on the sky and philosophy here - had a very tough day with allergies and asthma and just not up to re-finding them and getting them here alas) i'm taking a page from laura johnson and putting a link to a favorite hummer pic by a fellow smugger:

dedmanshootn > the always awesome ruby beach, wa (sepia)
10/19/09

this is one of my fav places i've ever been. for scale the tiny dot on the beach by the wave braking at the rear of the big rock in the center right ( straight below between the t and n of the watermark ) is an adult person. the path down was tougher than i was up to doing alas so i stayed up at the lookout while sis went down and poked around. we weren't here more than forty-five minutes and in that time i talked with some germans, chinese, koreans, canadians and people from several places around the usa including boston and chicago. i reckon its not just me that finds this place worth visitng and awe-inspiring! because i couldn't go down i was shooting waves from up here with my five-hundreed mm. its amazing how a long lens draws attention and conversations! i passed out a bunch of business cards. if any of you are seeing this i hope you enjoy my take and feel free to use the e-mail link on my card or homepage to contact me as i'd love to see your take. i hope everyone has a great week. remember to smile at someone today. if you're interested there's a color vertical shot from the last time i visited here:

dedmanshootn > grays harbor lighthouse, westport, wa (b&w)
10/18/09

this is the tallest lighthouse in washington and third largest on the u.s. west coast. i've included links below for those who'd like more pics, history and info. the two little 'pegs' in front of the small building are my sis and her friend which will give oyu some scale. we didn;t go inside but one can go up for a fee and willingness to climb over one-hundred steps. there's always some great pics on smug and in the dailies but it sure seems there's been a h9igh percetage of really fine stuff lately. wasn't able to spend as much time as i wanted smuggin but did get to see a lot of great pics. i know i've said it before but it jsut gets more true - its a pleasure and privilege to be involved with so many nice people and fine photogs!

dedmanshootn > green wave - (veiw enlarged for best)
10/17/09

i love waves. love to watch em, play in them, surf and bodysurf in em. the only time i didn't like waves when when we caught a serious storm when i worked fishing vessels in alaska. when the waves seem as big as the boat and your hop[ing and praying you're going to stay afloat you're not all that interested in what a great picture of power and beauty the waves make! but, on a beautiful warm sunny day like this was and safely dry ashore, and even more distant as i shot this with my five-hundred mm, i love waves ;-) . the ripples in the body of this one i found particularly fascinating so i upped the light and contrast to bring them out. hoping to spend some good time smuggin this week-end if i can swing it. enjoy you day

dedmanshootn > big guy on a flyby
10/16/09

this is one of the largest gulls i've ever seen here in western washington, his wingspan appeared to be well in excess of four feet. the wind was blowing steady in the high thirty mphs and he would come whipping by regularly to check on me. there are observation decks in westport and i was seated on a bench on one of them with my five-hundred mm on enjoying the day and trying to get some decent otw bird shots. he passed by at least ten times in the forty minutes or so i was there, maybe i had his seat or something :-) . i tried a bunch of shots of him and was very glad to find that at least one turned out like i hoped. have a greaat week-end. call someone you haven't for a while to let them know you're thinking of them. super wiped today so posting early and off to bed

dedmanshootn > brown pelican in flight (b&w)
10/15/09

i was more than a bit bummed as i had a two gig chip glitch as i was transfering to sis's laptop so i could reuse it and lost all the pics. they were mainly pelicans with some other birds, which were waht i nmost wnated to get during the trip this time - including my first everr pileated woodpecker :-( , but i was at least able to get some more pelican shots. they don't come to where i live, tho we do get plenty of other birds along our shores, so i was happy to get them. hope your week-end is great! if you wish the original is here:

10/14/09

den's wood den
 forks, wa
"stop by and see what we saw"

the carvings and other wood art here were terrific. sis and i couldn't help but buy something, though this beauty was already sold. its on the main highway south of forks and i definitely recommend you drop by and check it out. the nex pic in this gallery is a close-up oif the head for those interested

thanks for the overwhelming response to yesterday's (now renamed "the double bird blues" with thanks to : http://jlfoster.smugmug.com/ ) pic. i loved it but over fifty comments in a single day was completely unexpected and just blew me away! bless you all for your kindness! had a long day amd working the early shift tomorrow so posting early and off to bed. let some one know how much you care for them today

gulls at sunset near la push, wa (gray point altered)
10/13/09 (1 of 2)

same sunset as yesterday's pic, different focus. i changed the gray point in the sun and really liked the result so you're getting it for today. blue's are my fav color, as well as my fav music - bagpipes run a close second, so thaqt might explain why i like this better than the original. its the next pic so you can decide for yourself and comment on either, neither, or both if you wish

dedmanshootn > gulls at sunset near la push, wa
10/13/09 (2 of 2)

same sunset as yesterday's pic, different focus. conditions were such that the sunset lasted a pretty long time so i was able to play quite a bit. i was quite happy with this as i actually got it on purpose after noticing the gulls regularly crossing near me heading to roost for the night

dedmanshootn > sunset near the notch at la push, wa
10/12/09

sis and i made it out to la push, which has the honor of holding the farthest west zip code in the contigous usa, for the sunset one night. the beaches and sunsets there are as fine as anywhere in washington i think. went to a different spot than the last time i shto here
( http://dedmanshootn.smugmug.com/Mostly-nature/daves-faves/4931081_5dSa9#261384410_tCChs ) 'the notch', as i call it for obvious reasons, is behind james island in the other shot. while this time was not quite as stunning it was beautiful and we had a wonderfully relaxing time there. smile several times today, at the very least it will make people wonder what you're up to ;-)
